P-51 Mustang

This P-51 Mustang Tornado Vintage Metalsmith Rollerball with acid-etched design elements, recreates the classic WWII airplane on a pen. P-51 Mustang is widely regarded as the finest all-around piston engined fighter of World War II. It was produced in significant numbers and the first U.S. built fighter airplane to push its nose over Europe after the fall of France.

Dmitri

The first design in the Smithsonian collection by Retro 51 is the Corona twist-top rollerball pen. Its deeply etched barrel is reminiscent of the ornamental bronze-colored metal lattice that covers the outside of the National Museum of African American History and Culture building in Washington D.C.. Lead designer David Adjaye pays homage to the intricate ironwork crafted by enslaved African Americans in Louisiana, South Carolina, and elsewhere through the use of this design.

Gene Davis' Hot Beat

Gene Davis’s Hot Beat is part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s permanent collection. He was quoted saying, “it seemed to feel right, as we entered the sixties, to have color that leaped right off the wall ...
